Supporters of death row inmate Gary Sutton held a press conference urging a review of his conviction, citing execution protocols

Supporters of death row inmate Gary Sutton held a press conference at the Blount County Courthouse on Wednesday morning after a hearing he was supposed to have was put on pause.

According to court documents, Sutton was supposed to appear in court for a hearing regarding his intellectual disability. The Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals stayed the hearing while it reviews a petition filed by the state to prevent the hearing from proceeding. People with intellectual disabilities are ineligible for the death penalty.

Sutton's supporters spoke about Sutton's innocence, concerns about his case and the execution protocol in the state following the failed execution of Tony Carruthers.
